Old School Runescape, the proudly antiquated model of Runescape that still looks and performs like the game I sank countless hours into RS Gold when I actually should have been studying, is obtaining a raid. A fantastic raid requires good rewards, so when the Theatre of Blood was declared late last year, players were anxious to find out what clearing the multi-man challenge could make them. Jagex responded with Justicar armor, a new best-in-slot armor set (above). There was one small problem: players absolutely hated it. They memed onto it so hard that Jagex is now completely altering the armor's design. And not just that, the artist behind the Justicar armor,"Mod West," is utilizing designs submitted and voted on by players. Virtually all of Old School Runescape's upgrades go through participant polls, but that is the first time a suit of armor was forged in a fire of memes. The irony is that while players hated the'final' armor revealed earlier this year, they adored the prototypes revealed while the raid was declared. Originally, the Justicar armor was part of a trio of armor sets, West tells me, but since the Theatre of Blood moved from obscure concept to actual content, the armor changed with it. Players said there was enough DPS gear but not enough tank equipment, so it had been narrowed down to just one armor collection. And when they were just going to use one set, Jagex guessed they might as well create a new one based on the armor worn with the raid's big bad.
"We thought changing it up a little made sense," West says,"but players weren't quite on board with all the original proposal we shared on stream. And then, well, Reddit went crazy." The memes came out hard and fast. Many demanded a return to the model designs. Others thought the new armor did not seem tanky enough and liberally provided some choices, with some calling for a more extreme redesign.
It got so bad that a few players began to seriously believe a meme the updated armor was by a different artist, and that the artist that made the prototypes had left Jagex. But then something amazing happened. Even as memes blotted out the sun, slowly but surely serious suggestions began to shine through. It started with crude Photoshop jobs, but soon appropriate examples and fan art began to crop up. Players rallied around the idea of OSRS Buy Gold a milder, blessed armor group inspired by the Runescape god Saradomin, so that they moved back into West's prototype designs and made a few changes. Inspired from the memes and motivated by elements of West's designs along with other players' suggestions, legend_arts made a hybrid armor design so good it not merely silenced the memes, it got the attention of West himself.
